LA-born Marilyn Montufar returns to California each summer to recapture the slippery sense of home in her photographic portraits, exploring the ways identity interweaves with shifting, ephemeral landscapes. Montufar has been documenting communities in the U.S. for many years, and she recently began photographing in Mexico as well.
“An artist’s journey is one of discovery,” she says. “This journey began by looking outward at my community and friends and later expanded to photographing strangers and their communities in order to understand and share their stories. Ultimately, working on this photo series encouraged self-reflection as it speaks to my Xicana experience in both cultures.”
