Artistic Polymath Shaun Kardinal

Shaun Kardinal is an artistic polymath. Working full-time in design, he’s also an intrepid artist who makes use of everything from websites to embroidery to tease content. He’s launched viral projects like First Thursday Art Schlock and curated myriad large-scale projects like the year-long series TURN, which linked 12 artists in a game of artistic telephone—each one reimagining, destroying and transforming the previous artist’s work. For many years his personal practice has made use of the humble vintage wish you were here type travel postcard. He embroiders bucolic faded scenery of national parks, mountains or lakes with Spirographic pattern, or weaves and sculpts the postcards themselves into freestanding geometric forms. One of his largest sculptural pieces was recently installed at Seattle’s new Facebook headquarters.

“This sampling from 2009 – present mostly displays sketches from my art mind,” Kardinal says of his sketchbook practice. “But as a visual artist and web developer I tend to use my sketchbook when an idea has a form or requires visualization in order to write a function. I often use it to better organize tasks—columned lists usually accompany sketches of exhibition ideas, javascript shorthand, and one-liners for my other passion, philosophy 101 stoner-poems.”
