Sketchbook Porn: Liz Tran

Liz Tran transforms the observable, natural world around her into a paroxysm of prismatic, spastic, endorphin-inducing color. Recently Tran spent a month in Turkey as an artist in residence at the Babayan Culture House in Cappadocia and her sketches from that period draw on patterns, portals and auras invislbe to the naked eye.

“I don’t typically keep a sketchbook,” Tran says, “but prefer to keep ‘sketches’ in my head. The ideas that stick around are those that are executed, leaving the rest to be forgotten. I do, however, keep a sketchbook of sorts while traveling, which plays a large role in my life and work. The book is used as a catchall for itineraries, names, numbers, tickets, etc. I’ll combine written information with images, integrating snippets of memories with visual reminders. Another sketchbook I keep while on the road is my phone—or more importantly, the camera on my phone. It’s now so easy to discreetly document anything that catches my eye. Here, I’ve combined cell phone photographs with the more traditional sketchbook.”
