Katlyn Hubner‘s work is loud, fleshy and erotic in a way that teeters more abject than pornographic. Her Barbie series comprise plastic toys tangled in all manner of frottage (read more about that here), while her most recent work depicts parts of the human body vignetted: arms squeezing skin, mouths suffocating on or spewing bouquets of flowers.
“Ever since high school art classes where they taught us to sketch before painting, I would always get pissed off because I just wanted to paint,” Hubner says. “The prep before drove me nuts and I thought it was a waste of time, but I am learning to respect it much more because I can’t always remember everything. Because I am so impatient I tend to draw just enough information with squiggles so that I can recollect my thoughts. Seems like a secret code to myself so that I can remember what I want to focus on, whether I’m painting, taking polaroids or making videos. With my storyboards I ‘x’ them out as I go along, just to try to be more organized.
Some of these I just made while I waiting for my car to get fixed in the parking lot, smoking cigarettes and giggling the whole time—making ‘dirty’ drawings while other innocent individuals are watching Dr. Phil, waiting patiently for their cars to be returned—thinking about their faces and reactions if they could see my interpretations of ‘dickheads’ or my vision of telling someone to go fuck themselves. Or my homage to Prince with a drawing about ‘Pussy Control.’ Doodling metaphors. I am totally amused by the power struggle we are going through as humans with gender. Whether it’s turning into a wishbone or an avocado—just breaking the rules. And how sex, jealously, love, can take hold of us and our minds almost as strongly as a natural disaster on our planet.”
