Sketchbook Porn: Garek Druss

Garek Jon Druss embodies a blend of especially enviable Renaissance talent, as composer, musician, painter and visionary. Integrating studies in numerology and sacred mathematics, his work manifest as musical productions solo and collaborative—his band A Story of Rats, for instance—and fine-art installations filled with sound-generating sculpture. Sketched out on paper, his architectural imagery-cum-graphic score looks like blueprints for the invisible underbelly of the cosmos, inscribing ineffable mysteries with soft, pastel lines and an alphabet of symbols vacillating between inscrutable and legible.

“My sketchbook practice is fundamental to all of my creative developments,” says Druss, who recently relocated to London. “I keep two books, one for visual work and one for sound work. They always travel with me and I am constantly worried about losing them. Everything needs a starting place and for me, once it leaves my head or my heart, it goes directly into one of those books.”
