It’s been 10 years since Jonathan Evison’s propulsive, entertaining debut novel, All About Lulu, burst out of the gate with a Washington State Book Award. Now Evison, a dweller of Washington state and a repeat American Booksellers Association nominee for Most Engaging Author, is back with his fifth novel, Lawn Boy, out April 3 on Algonquin Books. In it, Mike Muñoz, an aspiring landscape artist, is starting to worry that his dream of a meaningful, lucrative career is out of reach for a young Chicano man.
“With Lawn Boy, I wanted to wake up the moribund American Dream,” Evison says. “Or better yet, invent a new American Dream, one not beholden to the tenets of capitalism or identity politics, or any measure but the human will to invent ourselves as we wish.
Evison reads from Lawn Boy on April 26 at Elliott Bay Book Company. Remember what we said about Most Engaging Author?
