“We dance, we scream, we cry, we are silly and playful, we have fun and we purge it all. It all comes from a deep, primal, visceral place. I call it ‘heart rock’ or ‘purge pop’ or ‘cathardcore.’ My favorite thing is seeing the audience at the end of the night, hugging each other, looking the band members deeply eye-to-eye, and it feels like everyone has had a weight lifted off.”

—Composer, musician and sensory artist Beth Fleenor, who performed with her group Crystal Beth & the Boom Boom Band—“part rock show, part motivational conference, part release ritual, part dance party”— at the Substation on Jan. 10.
