Freeway Park—the brutalist construction above I-5 that connects the Washington State Convention Center with First Hill—hosted a dance performance by choreographer Jody Kuehner on Saturday, July 14, presented by Velocity Dance Center. The park has some roots in dance: Opened in 1976, it was designed by landscape architect Lawrence Halprin with suggestions from his wife, Anna Halprin, who played a major role in redefining modern dance after WWII. Kuehner’s work, titled Brute Beauty, explored ideas of safety and empowerment for womxn.
