What I’m Listening To

Kathryn Smith, General Director, Tacoma Opera

Beatrice and Benedict by Hector Berlioz London Symphony Orchestra; Sir Colin Davis, conductor (LSO Live)
An absolute joy of an opera — partly comic and partly just plain gorgeous. We are performing it in November.

Kind of Blue
Miles Davis (Columbia)
Simply one of the greatest jazz albums of all time.  I never get tired of listening to it. And every time I hear it, I discover something new.

The Drowsy Chaperone
Original Broadway Cast (Ghostlight)
I love musical theater and this one just won a handful of Tony awards. A loving spoof  and homage to 1920s musicals, it’s quite clever and simply fun.

Piano Sonata No. 21 in B flat, D. 960 by Franz Schubert Mitsuko Uchida, piano (Phillips)
My favorite solo instrumental work, played by my favorite pianist. When I listen to it, I remember where I was and how I felt the first time I heard it.
