‘Lovers’ by Hans-Peter Feldmann

Are they married? Courting? All we know for sure about “Lovers” comes from the title. To create this image, conceptual artist Hans-Peter Feldmann used an old photograph and removed most of its identifying features, replacing them with wood grain. Feldmann depersonalizes this couple’s experience—though his alteration also makes the image more universal. Feldmann is known for his book art, multiples, reproductions and groupings. “Lovers” is on view through Jan. 6, 2012 as part of the Henry Art Gallery’s exhibit Now Here is also Nowhere: Part I, which deals in intangibility and the artist’s grasp to express it.
