Borealis’ festival of light art in South Lake Union

Over the weekend of Oct. 11–14, Borealis, a brand-new outdoor festival of light art, brought work by dozens light and video artists from around the world—and around Seattle—to South Lake Union. The 130′-wide, Art-Deco façade of the Museum of History & Industry became the backdrop for high-def, wildly psychedelic projection-mapped animations set to resounding musical scores and sound effects. Additional light art installations were sprinkled along streets, alleyways and buildings throughout SLU. For a first-year fest with international scope, Borealis was remarkably well programmed and thronged by a diverse crowd all weekend long.
