WHO John Michael “JM” Wilson, the 30-year-old production guru at Scrappy’s Bitters and bartender at Underwood Stables. Wilson grew up in Ivoryton, Conn., and landed in Seattle seven years ago. Now he and a team of three develop the flavors, source the ingredients, and concoct, bottle and label the magic that is Scrappy’s ever-growing array of handcrafted bitters. He also kegs a mean cocktail.
THE LOOK “Vintage Cowboy Biker. I don’t switch it up for nobody. I wear a lot of denim, preferably vintage American denim. Nothing like a worn-in pair of jeans. I get the majority of my clothes from Lucky Vintage in Ballard. I can’t seem to walk outta there without buying something. Also Horses Cut Shop for my tees and hats. If I’m not wearing my Horses Cut Shop trucker hat then I’m wearing my cowboy hat that my buddy Mike Giacolino shaped for me. I’m a big fan of the Stetson Open Road as well.”
ICONS “Lee Hazlewood, Willie Nelson, Antonio Banderas. Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood is one of my favorite characters ever. A man way before his time but also just ripe for the moment, and we also share a love for a large mustache. And Chuck Norris, of course.”
DRINK STYLE “If I’m not drinking a shot and a Rainier, then I’m having the fresh-ginger bourbon with Scrappy’s Firewater at Hazlewood in Ballard. Drew Church makes ’em just the way I like ’em.”
UP NEXT “Eventually I’ll quit being lazy and start playing music again. I’m a lead guitarist by trade but nurturing the vocal and songwriting side at the moment.”
