Welcome to the Holodome

Four years ago Paul Allen commissioned the engineering staff at Vulcan, Inc. to develop a real-life version of the Holodeck, the fictional chamber in Star Trek: The Next Generation capable of rendering any physical space imaginable. Their prototype, the Holodome, opened at MoPop in early May. It naturally falls short of the TV fantasy but is nevertheless very cool—an immersive audio-visual experience that one literally steps inside of, to be bathed in 360-degree, super-HD projections and wall-shaking sound. Up to six visitors at a time select one of four short storylines—a sci-fi adventure, a Justin Timberlake music video, an astronomical tour of black holes and a Seahawks-themed football scenario. Our group chose the Seahawks—and we were thoroughly wowed by the overwhelming vividness of the simulation.
