“We were working with ideas of invisibility and visibility. How do we make ourselves and others invisible or visible? Is history a continuous process of erasure? How do we resist, how do we remember and make space for multiplicity? I wanted to disrupt expectations around behaviors that are allowed and/or possible in certain landscapes, while using physical language that is not that different from what already is present in those moments.”

—Choreographer Alice Gosti, who adapted a section of her Velocity Dance Center-commissioned work Invisible Womxn for performance at the International Fountain during Bumbershoot last month. The work highlights stories of the local womxn who “were full partners in the bold venture of Seattle’s founders” yet are largely ignored in local history.
