Secret Chiefs 3 v. Dengue Fever

This double bill is a head trip through steamy, exotic, possibly fictional lands. With Middle Eastern instrumentation and song structures, splashy surf guitar, droning electronics, Morricone-esque cinematic sweep, and dudes dressed in Druid robes, Secret Chiefs 3 evoke a weird locale that's part meditative midnight oasis, part hashish-fueled fever dream. Far-flung in a different direction, Dengue Fever dips '60s Cambodian pop into American psych-rock and noir jazz, arriving at a vintage sound that’s equally authentic and surreal. Chhom Nimol sings primarily in Khmer while her band, which includes baritone sax, Farfisa organ, and one of the world's longest beards, reinterprets classic Cambodian radio tunes.
