Good Space

“Tacoma feels like Brooklyn ten years ago,” says glass artist Oliver Doriss, who opened Fulcrum Gallery late last year in the Hilltop neighborhood. “This is a do-it-yourself kind of town.” In June, when the Glass Art Society hosts an international conference in Portland, Fulcrum will push homegrown talent front and center with a group show titled “Local 253,” featuring work by Doriss, Joe Miller, Shannon Eakins and others. Doriss aims to make art more approachable through events such as artist lectures. (Galen McCarty Turner spoke recently while his installation “Impractical Luminesence,” above, was showing in the gallery.) And more kind-hearted by giving back: In July, Fulcrum hosts a benefit art auction for Metro Coffee-owner Charlie Kemp, who is recuperating from surgery.
