Great Dresser
- Lisa Kinoshita — January 1, 2008
Talented young fashion designer Chelsia Berry does hip, fanciful one-offs and limited-run frocks for insiders who have discovered her work. Berry cites influences from 1980s pop culture and politics (a star-studded, Wonder Woman-style belt and lots of camo), but her lush palette also reflects a painter’s eye: asymmetrical chiffon panels float over a skirt or bodice like a delicate layer of watercolor. Deconstructed dresses in salvaged fabrics — velvet, lace, striped suiting — have retro details such as rickrack and Studio 54-era handkerchief hems. Happily for fashionistas, her prices also turn back the clock: custom creations range from $60 to $225. Look for news of a Berry fashion event at the Monsoon Room in February.
