Posse Up!

I got the idea for “Posse on Broadway” way before I released it.

Every time I’d produce something, I’d look at everything that was out and I try to do the opposite. Everybody was doing TV hooks, like Inspector Gadget and I Dream of Jeannie. I’m not knocking it, because that’s where hip-hop was at the time. So I said, I’m gonna go back and grab me some sparse, basic boooom... deh-neh-neh-neh... and that was it! I was watching Godzilla one day and I mimicked Godzilla with my mouth, went through a harmonizer, and that was all I put in the song. Nothing else.

I got the idea for the title while we were on tour. We went to Frisco and we were on a Broadway, and we went to New York and we were on a Broadway, we went to Phoenix, Arizona, and we were on a Broadway with a Dick’s Drive-In on it! Four cities and I made up my mind. Everybody’s got a Broadway.

And keep in mind, street credibility was not an issue then. Because rap, other than Run-DMC,didn’t have a pop side. So everything had street credibility.
