In Store: The Odd Ball
- Jonathan Shipley — December 1, 2010

Nestled amidst the brick edifices of old Ballard, in an old champagne cave, is Space Oddity Vintage Furniture Gallery, just the place to discover that item you didn’t know you wanted to discover in the first place.
Stumbling through a mishmash of furniture in the tiny space, you can find a stand of female mannequins from the 1960s, matching bright blue comfy chairs, a coat tree taller than most actual trees, micro-credenzas on wheels, a raft of old wooden crates with “U.S. Bureau of Fisheries Biological Station” etched upon them, and a steel cabinet. Todd Werny, the owner, a former Seattle rock star (Diamond-Fist Werny), opened this location in 2006.
Werny says he’s there “for customers who are on a budget but can’t settle for the bad style of the chain stores.” You’re not going to find an Eames-era buffet at Sears, nor mid-century Danish chairs at IKEA, and that’s just the way Werny likes it.
