Walkabout: Downtown Renton

Downtown Renton

A walk in historic Renton, anchored by early-twentieth-century buildings, invites nostalgia. Glass artist Chris Heilman, a transplant from Portland, Maine, says it “feels like old America — that kind of friendly, small-town place where I grew up.” Take a leisurely stroll downtown and you’ll see what he means. Smiles and greetings are commonplace. We began with a lazy late-morning coffee but recommend that you start early and stay late. This charming community is full of hidden gems: Renton is also celebrated for its twenty-eight public parks, public golf course and boat launch.

1. 207 Main Avenue South Jet City Espresso (425.235.1529) “It sounds trite,” says Mike the baristo, “but Jet City really is a gathering spot for the community.” Housed in a former gas station, with its funkadelic interior decoration it’s like nothing we’ve seen. Exceptional coffee, too.

2. 230 Main Avenue South Uptown Glassworks (425.228.1849) Feeling artistic or looking for unique art? Uptown Glassworks offers hot shop rentals, glassblowing classes, blow-your-own events and an art glass gallery — all inside a one-hundred-year-old building. Call ahead for visiting artist schedule
to watch the masters at work!

3. 924 South 3rd Street Happy Delusions (425.255.6078) Mary Clymer’s delightful boutique is a showcase for independent crafters, jewelers, artists and designers. From chunky knits to quirky baubles and bags, this hot spot is your go-to destination for outstanding style.

4. 724 South 3rd Street Renton Western Wear (425.255.3922) Giddyup! This third-generation family-owned western-wear store features authentic cowboy hats, boots, clothing and, yes, even wedding dresses. You don’t have to be a rodeo rider to dress like you’re home on the range.

5. 310 Wells Avenue South Armondo’s Café Italiano (425.228.0759) We asked the folks around town where they love to eat. After indulging in a gigantic sausage-and-ricotta calzone, we know why Armondo’s comes so highly recommended. Delicious! A perfect family spot.
