Meet Chris & Greg, the Super 8 Brothers

Two locals discover that old school is back in.

Welcome to Super 8 Brothers, a new CAB feature giving you a window into the adventures of shooting Super 8 film. Greg and Chris are born-and-raised Seattleites dedicated to showcasing the beauty of their city and other areas through the lens of forty year old cameras. They want to meet and learn from others interested in the super 8 medium.

"Yes, the carpet does match the camera."

Chris: I can’t believe I finally got a starving photography student to sit down and write a blog with me.

Greg: Whatever, Chris. Let’s drop some old school film knowledge, Phinneywood-style.

Chris: Look Greg, I’m a fisheries biologist by day, I don’t have time to mess around. What are we doing here?

Greg: We’re here to show people why super 8 film is Super. Digital can’t touch it. Super 8mm shows the beauty of imperfection, it filters reality into a rawer form. Plus, the kids ain’t into it. Not yet, at least.

Here are a couple of clips to get you up-to-speed with the Super 8 look.

Chris: Check out footage from Aurora, or Highway 99. This is from the first roll of Super 8 I ever shot. Of course, while filming, I thought these were going to be the most epic images of all time. Well, they're not epic, but they were fun to shoot, and the music goes along well.

Greg: I found my first S8 camera at the Crown Hill Value Village for $15. I left for a trip to Japan without ever testing to see if it actually worked. To my pleasant surprise the camera seemed to work just fine. Here is my first minute of footage.

Chris: Yeah, it would be nice if we inspired a few people to take up "skinnier" film. It’s an accessible (though expensive) medium, and really fun. With this blog, let’s share film lessons learned and show some of our footage that turned out. Also, there are others out there doing some great Super 8 stuff, so we’ll pass on links to their films, too.

Greg: We’re no experts, Chris. Far from it. People are going to watch us learn, and crash and burn, right here on the CAB.

More soon!
